Louis Jobin High School in St. Raymond has developed a school program with an outdoors concentration that leverages the wealth of St-Raymond’s territory and surrounding areas. It was built in collaboration with Vallée Bras-du-Nord’s coop, whose expertise in education through adventure and nature has been successfully used. The school offers this program to students of 4th and 5th secondary level.
Members of the team, consisting of school staff and cooperative, provide training and technical workshops according to their fields of expertise. They also guide field trips and expeditions, which encourages students to develop their teamwork, leadership skills and social skills.
This unique program generates significant benefits for both young people and the community in general. It allows them to discover the variety and richness of St-Raymond’s and Portneuf’s territories, and promoted a reappropriation of these lands. Young people have changed their outlook on their own part of the country, and now know several new activities to practice on it. With skills of a technical nature and a greater awareness of their environment, these young people are now ambassadors of their region, the outdoors, and sustainable development.
Youth now emerge grown up and rich of a baggage that will follow for life: better understanding of self and others, a spirit of resilience, courage, perseverance, greater self-confidence, overcoming personal limitations, openness and awareness for the maintenance of good health.
Finally, several young people have mentioned that this rich experience had stimulated them enough to want to continue school. With such an amazing experience, many of our students have continued to work in the outdoor field, especially among us at Vallée Bras-du-Nord. Proud of this unique expertise, Vallée Bras-du-Nord can boast of being the outdoors cooperative which has the largest number of graduates in outdoors studies from Université du Québec à Chicoutimi.
